A singular opportunity to experience a production of West Side Story, on The 5th Avenue Theatre’s historic stage, performed and mounted by a remarkable group of local teens.

 

KEYNOTE PANEL

“A Time for Us: Confronting Injustice and Creating A Better Seattle”

1:10 - 2 PM
A panel composed of youth and community leaders discuss the relevance of West Side Story and The Arts within efforts to create positive change for our neighborhoods and beyond. Featuring: Carmen Best (Seattle Chief of Police), Bill Berry (Producing Artist Director, The 5th Avenue Theatre). Facilitated by James Miles (Executive Director, Arts Corps).

WORKSHOPS

Summit participants will cycle through three workshops facilitated by youth leaders and professional teaching artists. No prior experience is necessary.

WITHOUT COMMUNITY, THERE IS NO LIBERATION”
How can we create community and dialogue amongst strangers?
This workshop will focus on identifying and developing skills needed to build partnership and connect with new people.

LIFTING EVERY VOICE”
How can we use our voices intention? How can we develop habits of speaking that empower ourselves and those around us?
This workshop will focus on fundamental skills for public speaking as well as alternate modes for communication and advocacy.

TOMORROW IS TODAY”
Theater is built on the concept of action. Without action there is no play, no musical, no story. Similarly, Nelson Mandela has said: "Vision without action is just a dream, action without vision just passes the time, and vision with action can change the world."
This workshop will examine the idea of dramatic action as a framework for envisioning our future and for preparing to taking action in our communities and in the world.
